The history of the estate dates back to 1661, when Pierre de Rauzan, a merchant on the Place de Bordeaux and farmer of Château Margaux, acquired the lordship of Gassies and its vineyard. His descendants continued his work until the Revolution, at which time the estate was divided between Rauzan-Ségla and Rauzan-Gassies. In 1855, the two Rauzans were classified as 2nd Grand Cru Classé. The property now belongs to the heirs of Paul Quié, a wine broker who bought it in 1946. The family also owns the castles Bel Orme Tronquoy de Lalande and Croizet-Bages.
The meticulous breeding, this vintage 1981 then reveals over time notes of liquorice, vanilla, cinnamon, cocoa, and after a few years appears on the great cuvées the incomparable truffle… Its concentration in anthocyanins and tannins gives it an elegant purple dress, almost black with a rich and intense mouth, suitable of course for long aging.
